Edward Raymond Ames was born in Amesville, Ohio, May 20, 1806 and died in Baltimore, April 25, 1879. He studied at the University of Ohio. He became a Methodist, and in 1828, traveled to Illinois, where, in Lebanon, he founded the school which later became McKendree College.
